Meta, formerly Facebook, has finalised the acquisition of fitness VR company Within.
Within created the fitness app Supernatural. A subscription based platform which pairs with smart watches to measure heart rate, and overlays video scans of trainers into gamified training scenarios, creating workouts in virtual reality.
Meta have been acquiring many developers in the VR space over recent years, and Within is a deal they have been trying to get over the line for 24 months.
“Today marks an exciting new chapter for Supernatural, as we officially join Meta,” Chris Milk, CEO of Within said in a statement.
“We’re elated for the opportunity to bring joy, awe, wonder, and a happier, healthier life to more people around the world.”
VR and AR fitness has become a key component of Meta’s platform strategy within the space. It will be interesting to see whether Meta allows Supernatural to be compatible with other VR headsets and platforms and what changes are made to the app.
What does this mean for gym owners? The VR market is becoming more accessible and attractive as an exercising ground for tech-savvy users.
