How to Solve Your Gym’s Staff Recruitment Problem in 8 Steps

  • Blog, Gym Management
  • March 29, 2023

Finding the right employees to work in your gym or health club can be a challenge. We teamed up with Love Recruitment to help you simplify the process!

Finding the right employees to work in your gym and health club can be a challenge, especially considering that we are in an “employees market” and competing with other health clubs and gyms as well as other sectors.

Below are 8 simple steps that the team at Love Recruitment would recommend to increase your chances of finding the best candidates for your gym!

1. Define the job role

This is super important! Before you start recruiting for your gym, it’s important to have a clear understanding of the job role you’re trying to fill.

This means defining the responsibilities and requirements for the position, including any necessary qualifications or certifications.

Once you have a solid job description, you’ll be better equipped to attract the right candidates.

2. Write an effective advert

This is your first and sometimes most important opportunity to highlight why a potential employee should work for you.

An effective advert should not be a generic job description!

Here are a few things that candidates want to hear about: salary, company culture, progression opportunities, key responsibilities.

This step is super important, since it’s your biggest opportunity to make a great first impression, and we would highly recommend you to take your time, so that you can get it right.

3. Advertise in the right places

To reach potential employees, you need to advertise in the right places. Posting job openings on job boards, social media platforms, and industry-specific websites can help you find qualified candidates.

Define your budget and advertise on the most relevant job-boards.

We would also recommend having an internal referral campaign for your staff and encourage them to recommend their friends, ex-colleagues and connections.

4. Offer competitive pay and benefits

One of the biggest challenges in the fitness industry is retaining employees.

To help reduce turnover, it’s important to offer competitive pay and benefits packages.

Some of the most wanted perks include health insurance, pension, enhanced annual leave, and gym memberships.

By offering valuable and exclusive perks, you’re bound to attract and retain top talent in the area!

5. Provide opportunities for growth

Many people who work in the fitness industry are passionate about health and wellness.

By providing opportunities for growth and development, you can help your employees advance their careers while also improving your gym’s operations.

This can include offering training programs, mentorship opportunities, and leadership roles.

6. Ask the right questions

When you start receiving CVs and applications, it’s important to conduct thorough interviews to ensure that you’re hiring the right people.

Our recommendation is always to ask the same questions to every candidate and conducted a structured interview.

In addition to asking about their experience and qualifications, you should also ask behavioural questions to gauge their work ethic, communication skills, and ability to work in a team.

7. Do a background check

Before making a job offer, it’s important to check references and conduct background checks to ensure that candidates are qualified and trustworthy.

This can include calling previous employers, checking education and certification records, and conducting criminal background checks.

8. Welcome new joiners with training

Once you’ve hired new staff members, it’s important to onboard and train them properly.

This can include familiarising them with your gym’s policies and procedures, introducing them to other staff members, and providing ongoing training to help them succeed in their role.

Make sure to make time to get to know your team on a personal level too – we’re all humans at the end of the day!

The above steps should be taken as a guidance when you’re building your team and looking to attract great staff members that will help your gym thrive. Remember to be patient and persistent in your search for the right candidates and to really listen to the needs of your employees as you build your team.
